Petrol Prices!!!

reporter: Jonathan, 13.9.05

Petrol Prices have gone down!

Yay for everyone!

BUT!

I was pondering!... Petrol is not that expensive!!! Shock horror you might say!!! but think about this...

Petrol is cheaper than milk!!

Petrol is a non-renewable resource. It's main production is from overseas (it is imported). It goes through a significant refining process. All things which would suggest a high price.

Milk is a renewable resource. It is produced in abundance right here in good old New Zealand. It does go through certain processes, but doesn't need really need to. All things which would suggest a lower price.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

But that's comparing apples with oranges!.....I mean petrol with milk.

we pay 4.59 per gallon of milk, and 2.85 a gallon for milk. although i agree with your reasoning, i dont want to pay 4.59 US dollars for gas!

i would be curious to work out the equivelent compared to here...

To fins out is you milk way cheaper than ours... or is you gas way more expensive.

reporter - Blogger Jonathan, at 9:27 am, September 13, 2005

Ok I just worked it out.

Petrol:-
US people pay $NZ 1.72 per litre
NZ people pay $NZ 1.55(ish) per litre
Not too different.

Milk
US people pay $NZ 1.07 per litre
NZ people pay $NZ 1.60(ish) per litre
WHAT THE!!!

Aren't we world leaders in dairy production! My illusions have been destroyed!

I'm puzzled - how come the New Zealand prices are '(ish)' while US prices are exact?

Also, where's dak-ind from? seems like according to him, they pay a lot more for milk compared to petrol.

reporter - Anonymous Anonymous, at 10:38 am, September 13, 2005

The NZ Prices are (ish) because the petrol prices are changing almost daily! and I can rememebr the exact price we pay for our milk as it's always part of the whole groceries.

Dak-ind if from USA I'm guessing. And their comment has a mis-print I think.

I think the first sentence should read:-

"we pay 4.59 per gallon for petrol"

rather than

"we pay 4.59 per gallon of milk"

does than help?

reporter - Blogger Jonathan, at 11:32 am, September 13, 2005

should be

"and I can't rememeber the exact price we pay for our milk"

reporter - Blogger Jonathan, at 11:33 am, September 13, 2005

Getting the milk from the cow to the fridge isn't a cheap process and it mainly driven by export prices. Fonterra sells most of it's milk overseas. International markets are prepared to pay more therefore the NZ consumer pays more.

Well that sucks. It shouldn't be the case... It's wrong that Coke is cheaper than milk.

reporter - Blogger Jonathan, at 3:50 pm, September 13, 2005

$2.95 per 2 litre at the dairy here.
Cheapest I know of. Not that I've looked hard.
That's dairydale dark blue top. Works out 10 cents cheaper than pams brans 2l dark blue.

Are these verification thingis part of blogger now or optional? Makes peopel think twice before bothering to write a quick comment :-p

reporter - Anonymous Anonymous, at 1:23 am, September 14, 2005

they're optional.

It only takes 5 seconds to do them!! and you'd be whinging if there was spam!!!

reporter - Blogger Jonathan, at 8:14 am, September 14, 2005

lol. Don't bite me :p

I know they work.
I just don't need them for mine it seems.

In fact, my brain has been trained to ignore spam completly (chat emails were filled with it hundreds a day)

Was just wondering as they all popped up at once.

The price of milk in the USA may have sometime to do with government farming subsities. In NZ there are no longer subsities so it is therefore harder for farmers to make a living. Farmers may do quite well from milk, but there are a lot of industry related costs that have risen in the last few years, making things a bit harder for the average farmer

reporter - Anonymous Anonymous, at 9:11 pm, September 14, 2005

...transport costs being one of them (higher price of fuel)

Jono- making Coke is just dumping sugar and other additives into a big vat of water. The process for making milk is so much bigger and longer than that! Anyway milk is full of milky goodness and coke is crap. You pay more for a better healthier drink!

reporter - Blogger Anita, at 12:23 pm, September 15, 2005

I was more thinking allong the lines of what sam said. I realise that coke is simplier to make. However it's still wrong that it's cheaper than milk! Milk is far more beneficial than coke and should be cheaper. If it's not, then the Government should take steps to make sure it is! Governments of the past saw it's benefit and gave it out free at schools.

reporter - Blogger Jonathan, at 1:24 pm, September 15, 2005

Like i said... :)
If that is the case them Government should do something about it. It doesn't matter why. It's still wrong
